Taishan Rock Group

Biotite Granulite of Shancaoyu Formation, Taishan Rock Group

From bottom to top, Taishan Rock Group comprises Yanlingguan Formation, Shancaoyu Formation, and Liuhang Formation.

Rocks that make up Yanlingguan Formation are fine-grained to ultrafine-grained amphibolite, amphibole granulite, biotite granulite, mica schist, actinolitic tremolite schist, metamorphic conglomerate and some of magnetite-quartzite. Outcrop thickness is 200-1,430m.

Shancaoyu Formation is mainly biotite granulite that varies in composition and intercalated with small quantities of amphibolite, two-mica-schist and magnetite-quartzite. Thickness is 2,110m. Graded beddings, cross beddings, micrographic beddings and palimpsest sandy structures are common.

Liuhang Formation is primarily chloritic schist, biotite granulite, amphibole biotite granulite, sericite-quartz schist, intermediate-acidic metamorphic volcanic breccia, metamorphic conglomerate and intercalated with amphibole magnetite-quartzite.

Komatiite

Komatiite with spinifex texture

Komatiite is ultrabasic extrusive rock that crops out in Sujiagou. It is a basic volcanic rock of the Yanlingguan Formation, Taishan Group. Within this rock is the only recognized spinifex structure in China today. A product of ultrabasic rock extrusion during the appearance of early rifts in the crust, it is an important component of the craton. The formation of such granite-greenstone belt in west Shandong, including komatiite, is both rare and representative in China. It takes the form of lenticular remnants occurring in Precambrian granite, manifesting typical spinifex structure and palimpsest spinifex structure.

The Cambrian Stratigraphic Section

Stratigraphic Structure Model of Gu Bodies in Daigu Landforms

The Palaeozoic-Cambrian System is a suite of marine facies carbonate rock and terrigenous clastic rock that rests discordantly on the basement. The top part is weathered and denuded. Major strata occurring in the geo-region include Mantou Formation, Zhangxia Formation and Gushan Formation.

Mantou Formation:This is the main rock that makes up the base of Daigu landforms. This formation rests discordantly on the Cambrian System basement. It is divided into an upper section and a lower section, measuring about 280m thick in total. The lower section is relatively thick shale composed of yellow-green shale-mauve shale-thinly-bedded micritic limestone. It contains trilobite fossils. The upper section is mainly sandy limestone formed by calcareous sandstone-calcareous limestone-sandy limestone. Sedimentary structures like parallel beddings, cross beddings and bimoda cross beddings are present.

Zhangxia Formation:This is the main rock that makes up the top of Daigu landforms. Lying in conformity on top of the Mantou Formation, it is divided into three sections from bottom to top which are 160m thick in total. The lower limestone section is mainly grey-green thick-bedded egg stone (oolitic limestone) bearing glauconite and bioclasts. The middle shale section is mainly yellow-green shale intercalated with grey medium-thinly bedded micritic limestone and grey medium-thinly bedded edgewise calcirudite. The upper limestone section is mainly thick-bedded stromatolitic limestone.

Gushan Formation:Outcrops of this formation are limited in this geo-region. It lies in conformity on the Zhangxia Formation. Composition includes calcirudite-micritic limestone-yellow-green shale with parallel and corrugated beddings. Scouring surface is observable at the bottom of the calcirudite. It is about 60m thick in total.
