Geological Overview

Yimengshan Geopark lies in the uplift belt of western Shandong Province. Preserved within are important geological records of early crust formation and development. Basic and ultrabasic volcanic rock and pyroclastic rock formed the Taishan Rock Group in the Early Neoarchean. In the Middle Neoarchean, mantle-derived magma (Taishan Series) and TTG granite (Xinfushan Series) intruded. In the Late Neoarchean, emplacement by second-stage TTG granite (Fengshan Series) and adamellite (Aolaishan Series) took place when part of the lower crust melted. These rocks were key materials for continental crust accretion. Thereafter, the entire region had experienced general uplift. Niulan diabase intruded about 1,600 million years ago. That signified the formation of the Precambrian crystalline basement. In the Early Palaeozoic, the intrusion of kimberlite pipes, veins or sheets produced China’s first kimberlite-type primary diamond field. As a result of neotectonic movement, post-Cambrian strata in some areas became denuded. This gave rise to an important endemic topographic feature ―Daigu landforms.

Stratigraphy

Yimengshan Geopark has a diverse rock formations developed in a wide range of geological period, for example the Early Neoarchean Taishan Rock Group, the Palaeozoic-Cambrian-Ordovician System, the Mesozoic-Jurassic System, the Mesozoic-Cretaceous System, the Cainozoic-Paleogene System, the Cainozoic-Neogene System and the Quaternary System.

Situated in the uplift belt of western Shandong Province, Yimengshan Geopark is the site of four uneven tectonic units which are alternately distributed. Two concave and two convex, these units are the raised Mengshan and Menglianggu, and the depressed Mengyin and Pingyi. All of them extends NW. The region has a deformed base caused by strong compression. This is a general tectonic feature of the entire region. It is mainly manifested in north-west trending basement folds and ductile shear belts. Most fault activities took place in the Mesozoic. The best-developed north-west trending faults are the principal part of the region's tectonic structure. As a result of extended activities of the Mengshan faults, the downthrow Precambrian basement was uplifted to become the raised Mount Mengshan, while the upthrow side subsided to form the Pingyi fault-depression basin. These activities also dictated the sedimentation in the basin from the Jurassic to the Paleogene.
