Pictographic Rock (Turtle Sending Birthday Greetings)

The Guimengding rock mass was eroded into diverse turtle-shaped rocks by weathering long the joints and gneissosity. The stone on the peak looks like a giant turtle worshiping in the direction of Guimengding. The locals call it “Turtle Sending Birthday Greetings”.

Pictographic Rock (Fluttering Bird)

This is an abrupt block of rock lodged at the highest point of the uplands. It resembles a magical bird fluttering its wings to take flight. This pictographic rock was created by later joint incision and weathering.

Pictographic Rock (Turtles Going out to Sea)

Atop a cliff 1,000 meters above sea level, granodiorite was weathered along the joints and gneissosity for longtime. It was denuded into a wide range of turtle-shaped pictographic rocks. Some seem to be in deep thoughts with eyes closed, others are crawling forward slowly. Every piece is lively and adorable, just like a bunch of turtles gazing across East China Sea.

Spherical Weathering (Stone Eggs)

Surface weathering, such as temperature and freeze-thaw processes, created spherical granite formations in granite gneiss. They are a typical type of spherical efflorescence.

There are many oval or heart-shaped potholes on the surface of the Guimengding rock mass. Characterized by small openings, big bodies and flat bases, they are mostly curved and concave. They are believed to be old age potholes. Granodiorite is an easily eroded rock. Weak points on granite surface would be easier to form small pits. Subsequently, the combined effect of unfreezing, temperature difference, wind erosion turns them into potholes.

Aolaishan Series monzonitic granite about 2,520 Ma ago that emerges in large scale inside the Yunmeng Area. As a result of joint cutting and weathering, it was subsequently sculpted into an outcropped and stacked peak. Its most striking feature is a giant teapot-shaped vividly rock block at the top. The pines at the summit swaying in the breeze are waving to welcome tourists from all over the world.

Peak Yingwo is composed of the intrusive Guimengding Unit about 2,539 million years ago, belonging to gneissic granodiorite. Due to the well-developed two sets of vertical joints (cracks), the rock is cut and fractured along the joints, after a long-term weathering, denudation and collapse, the numerous steep cliffs finally appeared.

Peak Dayunmeng and Peak Xiaoyunmeng

Gazing east into the distance from here, Peak Dayunmeng and Peak Xiaoyunmeng make up the Chinese character shan (mountain). It is said that Cang Jie the inventor of Chinese characters was inspired by these peaks and came up with the character shan. These crests are also called Brush Stand Peaks. According to legend, Wang Xizhi rested his pen here. The 1,026m Peak Yunmeng is the one of the highest peak of Mengshan Mountain.
