Partitioned Mode Aimed to Protection

To facilitate zoning conservation and management, protection zones in Yimengshan Geopark are divided into four grades according to the distribution characteristics and association patterns of geoheritage: special protection zones; grade one protection zones; grade two protection zones and grade three protection zones.

Special protection zones include the Sujiagou komatiite and Wangfushan rock mass (west Shandong craton). These are prohibited zones open only to authorized research and managerial personnel engaging in conservation or scientific research activities. There are segregated areas for effective protection, a monitoring system for constant surveillance, and designated staff to oversee control.

Grade one protection zones: Important geoheritage sites in the geopark that require stringent protection and their environs are designated as grade one protection zones. Main examples are selected pictographic landforms, Shengli No. 1 outdoor mine pit and selected Daigu landforms. All grade one protection zones are equipped with necessary sightseeing trails and related sightseeing facilities. Visitor traffic is controlled appropriately and no motorized vehicles are allowed. All production or development activities are prohibited.

Grade two protection zones: Grade two protection measures are in place for geoheritage sites in the geopark that require focused protection and other important natural scenic spots. These include unusual peaks, pictographic rock formations, selected Daigu landforms, the Huxianlou collapse site and others. Grade two protection zones offer only limited tourist facilities and motorized vehicles access is restricted.

Grade three protection zones: These are geo-conservation zones not belonging to the aforesaid categories. Necessary tourist facilities are provided as appropriate. All such zones are carefully maintained to ensure harmony with the surrounding environment.
