The 6th UNESCO Global Geopark Management and Development International Training Course opened in Yimengshan Global Geopark on October 8.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhang Jianping, vice chairman of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, member of the Executive Bureau of the Global Geopark Network, and professor of China University of Geosciences (Beijing).
Kristof VANDENBERGHE, Secretary-General of the UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat, Nikolaos Zouros, Chairman of the Global Geopark Network, and Guy Martini, Chairman of the UNESCO Global Geopark Council, delivered speeches in video or online video respectively. Vice Chairman of the Global Geopark Network, Coordinator of the Asia-Pacific Geopark Network, Researcher of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences Jin Xiaochi, Director of the Natural Park (Natural Heritage) Management Division of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration Department of Nature Reserve Management Yuan Xiaohong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences Ma Yan, Deputy Mayor Zheng Liansheng of Linyi Municipal Government, and Ma Junjie, Secretary of the Party Committee of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and Dean of the Institute of Natural Culture, delivered speeches successively at the opening ceremony.
Zheng pointed out in his speech that Linyi is a famous historical and cultural city, a well-known old revolutionary district in the country, a capital of commerce and trade, and even a city of mountains and rivers. Yimeng Mountain Global Geopark is composed of Mengshan Park, Diamond Park, Daigu Park, Menglianggu Park and Yunmeng Lake Park, with a total area of 1804.76 square kilometers. In recent years, the Linyi Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government have conscientiously practiced the concept of “green water and green mountains are the golden mountains and silver mountains”, and actively promoted the protection of Mengshan and the development of global tourism. In April, it was officially named a Global Geopark by UNESCO, becoming the 38th in my country and the second in Shandong Province after Mount Tai, and it has become a model for the construction of ecological civilization in the country and the Global. In November 2019, the Linyi Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government established the Linyi Mengshan Management Committee and the Yimeng Mountain Global Geopark Administration, with the vision of "Global famous geological mountains and national ecological model" to create an ecological civilization practice highland and rural revitalization. Highlands, red cultural heritage highlands, and high-quality tourist destinations are the medium-term goals. The geopark will work hard to strengthen the implementation of the ecological civilization construction of Mengshan Mountain and the high-quality development of Mengshan Mountain and Yimeng Mountain Global Geopark. In the next step, the geopark will strictly abide by the purpose of the UNESCO Global Geopark, insist on major protection and no major development, and protect the Yimeng Mountain Global Geopark as if protecting the eyes, making it a popular science park that showcases the evolution of Linyi’s geology. The geopark willmake unrelenting effort to grow into a model for the protection and utilization of the Global Geopark.

More than 120 staff and scientific researchers from Global Geoparks, candidate sites for Global Geoparks, scientific research institutes, colleges and universities, and other technical support units participated in the training.
This training course was co-organized by China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Administration of Yimeng Mountain Global Geopark and the National Geopark Network Center Office of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. The Aegean University in Greece provided technical support and received the UNESCO Global Geology Secretariat of the Park, the Global Geopark Network, the Asia-Pacific Geopark Network, the Department of Nature Reserve Management of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the Secretariat of the National Commission for UNESCO.
The training course is aimed at the current status of UNESCO Global Geoparks in the Asia-Pacific region, with the theme of geopark declaration, assessment and re-evaluation, and invites the directors of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, members of the Executive Board of the Global Geoparks Network and the Global of excellence Experts from geoparks and other institutions serve as lecturers, aiming to promote geopark managers to understand the Global geoparks and improve their management capabilities.
The training course is composed of lectures and group discussions, on-site learning and exchange and example analysis, combining expert lectures, problem solving, discussions and field trips, etc., to provide comprehensive and targeted training and seminars on the concept, criteria, declaration, evaluation and re-evaluation of the Global Geopark, emphasizing the relevance and effectiveness of the training.
